Two films on one VHS, describing Quality Control processes. 1. Food Kitchens and Laboratories, with commentary. Focuses on cooked food. Recipe creation followed by a selector checking suitability for bulk production. The film discusses quality monitoring in production, with all fish products being eaten and tested over a three week period. They then move onto quality control - pricing, labelling, weight and production code are all chceked and recorded. Kedgeree is shown as an example. Two samples from different production codes are cooked together, then examined for texture & consistency, colour and ratio of fish to rice before being tasted. Tasting panels are then discussed, with delicatessen lines, cheeses and fruits. There is a separate tasting room for wines and beverages - the film includes a tasting of a box of Leibfraumilch, with each bottle checked under light for any sediment. Then the cork is removed and the quality of the wine checked, before being blind tasted. Two analytical laboratories used (bacteriological and chemical) by technicians. The film shows samples of minced meat being tested in a chemical lab so fat content can be analysed before being processed and tested again for bacteria. Technologists then recommend a shelf life based on these results. The film moves on to non-cooked foods. Products from other suppliers are also tested to compare quality and value. Examples of cartons of fruit juice, cheeses and cold meats are included. A produce technologist is shown doing routine checks on different fruits - labels, prices, sell by dates and production codes. Fruit is measured by size then tasted for texture and flavour. Runtime: 13 minutes 2. Textiles, with commentary. This film discusses laboratory tests on physical and washing properties before production of a line begins. The laboratory has constant temperature and humidity with air conditioning and airlocked doors to create correct conditions for testing products. Fabrics are tested in many ways: Pulling force to test seam strength, Abrasion machine to test wear and tear, Bursting strength machine to test strength of lace, Rotating wooden boxes to measure pilling, Equipment for measuring creasing and snagging. The film also shows a rain machine which tests waterproofing. The film also shows how fabrics are tested for shrinkage, colour-fastness, light-fastness and perspiration using washing tests.
