Marks and Spencer-Year End Results 1998-99. Chief Executive Peter Salsbury introduces the new team on the panel and outlines the structure and topics to be discussed at the conference. Salisbury announces the talking part of the conference will last for 45 minutes and this will be followed by questions from the audience. Finance Director Robert Colville begins by discussing the Group Summary which includes pre-tax profits and accountability. Then Managing Director of UK Retail Andrew Stone talks of changing ranges to co-ordinated collections and lifestyles to meet the new demands of the needs of customers. Examples he uses include lingerie and the launch of the 'Café Select' range and new children's range on foods. Managing Director for Overseas Retail Guy McCracken then speaks about the unfortunate low profit turnover in Marks and Spencer's overseas stores. This is followed by Robert Colville who talks about financial services such as store cards and life assurance. This is finished off with a round of questions from the audience. Announces that since last conference two years ago we have seen: - Increased UK sales by half billion pounds. - Overseas sales expected to be £1.2M per annum. - Won Queen's Award for Exports in 1995 and Technology in 1996. - Increased financial activity by 46%. - Now up to 5.5 million Charge Card holders. - Shares up by 24%. - Seen share point rise to around £5 so company now valued at over 14 billion pounds. Asks if we should be satisfied by present growth£ No. He believes increased sales at home and abroad should be faster. Followed by Peter Salsbury who was interrupted by actress playing a dissatisfied customer. Input by Roger Ackroyd with film of improvements at Newcastle store. Contributions from Jim McCallum and Clara Freeman, introducing Guy McCracken who talked of foods and how we need to grow in the UK, internationally and with our people. Input from Andrew Stone on developing technical innovation. Conference then heard about new fabric developments in pillows and duvets and climate controlled clothing. Conference concluded with speech by Sir Richard Greenbury who said £10b of sales and £1 billion in profits are now in sight in investment plans. This video takes place at the Business Conference at Grosvenor House, London. Peter Salsbury mentions the focus of the conference is to explain the ways in which Marks and Spencer are planning on improving customer service. At the beginning Roger Aldridge uses Newcastle store as a case study to show how Marks and Spencer have delivered a new level of customer service. Improvements include improved access for customers by reconfiguring the Haymarket bus station to allow easier access, and looking at facilities for customers with special requirements, making the customer feel safe by adding extra CCTV and providing more fitting rooms. Other improvements across the business include collect by car service, filing stock at night to allow staff to serve customers throughout the day, and a made to measure suit service in London stores.
