VHS, 'The Shape of Things To Come Towards 1990' Introduction and conclusion by Lord Rayner. The Business conference covers various topics including 'Management of Change': Increase of space to manage sales volume, Sunday Trading and the need to keep surroundings reflective of fashion, homeware and food that is sold and its quality. It goes to discuss the introduction of the charge card; new generations of chilled and frozen storage and increase in convenience food; wine, produce, gifts, horticulture. Further development of technology to keep growing sales. Discussion of ladies wear includes a mini fashion show on the shop floor. Discusses percentage of the market and footfall which each department can account for. A typical shop floor layout is also mentioned as is phasing of catalogue. Bounty packs to include vest and catalogue from M&S. Homeware was to be restructured to include new departments and cohesion across the range. Discusses introduction of edge of town stores, including Metrocentre Gateshead to open in 1986 and satellite stores: Coppergate in York, Huddersfield, Princes Store, Edinburgh and Oxford Street. The film is a mock trial format and is based on actual records of three cases of criminal activity in stores. The first case involved a young male assistant working on tills who worked in co-ordination with two warehousemen. The case is then discussed and how a process of elimination by colour blocking tills was used to determine who was responsible. The second case involved a supervisor on childrenswear who processed false refunds while assisting on the customer service desk. Starts with a Design Department employee introducing the ranges for Spring and Summer. This was the dress rehearsal for main show which would be performed for Lord Rayner. Briefly discusses the function of the Design Dept which is to look for major trends and long term development - the overall trends running through the show would be Japanese and 1950s, with a focus on natural fabrics. There are six main themes in the show, looking at trends for Spring 1984: workwear, Indigo, Architectural, Maritime, Fifties and African safari. Each theme is accompanied by an introduction from a member of the Design team - Work wear theme - brightly coloured spring looks - Indigo - denim looks. Transition: uses classic wool and wool mixtures to show that budget merchandise can be stylish. Masculine look with unstructured shapes to reach shops before Christmas. Also Polyesters and man-made fabrics. Transparents: is a group aimed at younger casual and leisure wear, with less hardware. Hip emphasis and loose tops are emphasised. Brings in different dye techniques and fabrics. With boxer short and singlet styles borrowed from menswear. Colonial: strong fashion theme, nostalgic and refined, menswear influenced, longer lines, day and evening wear. Knitwear influence more refined and more linens. Beige and greys with dusky pastels. M & S has launched a new range of wash products to serve the needs of the clothes not the washing powder manufacturers. Different specialist staff give reasons for why the range of products are needed. Graham Burden, M & S Cotton Specialist. Judith Batchelar M & S Homecare selector emphasises the needs of garments having specific wash needs. This is in response to a quarter of all complaints relating to how clothing have been washed.
