Sir Richard Bloombury, CEO of M&S, narrates this video throughout. He starts by announcing at the annual AGM that the company rode the recession of 1991-2 and he promises continuing growth and investment of £300m both at home and abroad. His first area of focus is staff support. He maintains that staff cannot offer good service if they cannot provide the right product in size and colour that the customer wants. He calls this 'basic shop-keeping'. He stresses that quality, availability and price are paramount. Despite growth in the Far East, the USA and Europe, he sees the UK as the 'powerhouse' of the business still. The introduction of the 'Going to Town' roadshow, visiting fifty four towns across the UK, is an attempt to work with local councils to improve roads, parking and pedestrianisation so that town and city centre shopping can be as attractive as out-of-town destinations. Massive business, he points out, is still done in stores in major city centres. Europe: There are plans for 40-50 stores in the right locations. Sir Richard humorously expresses his preference for attractive European destinations over UK ones. Merchandise: The company is working with buying teams at suppliers to focus on the value and quality which are vital to M&S' success. One example from the food range is the success of the product 'rack of ribs'. Price is also important, as a recent line of men's polo shirts demonstrated. The item was experiencing slow sales but these doubled once a £2 reduction was introduced. Sir Richard stresses the need to be out and about in stores in order to see for himself how the business is working. He spends Friday afternoon and all day Saturday doing just that. He mentions once again that over 80% of products sold by M&S are made in the UK and 150,000 employees are involved in their manufacture. Every month the CEO and senior staff eat a meal together and share their reactions to new products. Sir Richard maintains again that price is not the priority, quality is - 'Quality led, not price led.' Security : 'Crime Concern' is an initiative co-sponsored by M&S. £21m is to be spent in the current year on security guards and CCTV. Armed robbers and violent criminals are a growing problem. Community : Sir Richard is also the President of the charity 'Cottage Homes' which provides homes for retired retail workers, as well as the heart charity 'Corda'. Service : Customers are always looking for quality and staff need training and knowledge in order to provide this. This video was filmed in an engineering company and discusses the introduction of quality control in their products. Actors role playing management team talk about stopping goods inward inspection, goods received should be 100% perfect. Talk about their own products being in perfect condition when sold and how it can be achieved by creation of quality control. Prevention costs are important and results in fewer failure and appraisal costs. "Concentrate on prevention and the rest falls into place". Introduced hourly checks by inspectors trained in what faults to look for and filling in chart with operatives then taking over role with inspectors becoming roving trouble shooters. Proved that quality control increased reduced failure costs and increased profits. Filmed by Anvil Films for British Productivity Council who thanked Automotive Products Co. Ltd and Marks & Spencer. This short film is an advertisement for companies to invest in health and safety videos for their workforce. The film informs the viewer of a collection of short films that have been made by Millbank to highlight different situations where health and safety procedures in the workplace have not been followed and serious injuries have occurred as a result. The film highlights the importance of using film and staging affects as a tool to provide dramatic impact for viewers in the hope that they will take safety in the workplace seriously. At the end an address and telephone number can be seen for the viewer to be able to order the films. The full-length short films were made by Millbank Films Limited over three decades this is only a sample of some of the titles the company produced. Running Time: 0:11:24mins

Video with cartoon cats explaining the Halifax Building Society and M&S share/save options scheme. Shows two male cats in suits in a bar discussing work and one mentions he has shares in his company. It then moves on to show two female cats in an office discussing the shares in more detail and that there will be a meeting tonight regarding shares. The scheme is then explained - tax free interest and an option to buy the shares after 5 or 7 years. There is a return on investment and the shares can be sold. You can save as you earn and set a monthly maximum. There is a five year plan and a 14 month contribution plan at £20 per month, and a bonus of £280 tax free. The option contract offers the chance to sell shares at the end of 5 years. There is a fixed price of up to 10% below the average quoted by the stock exchange at the start of the contract. You can share/save - save and receive high interest bonuses and share you become part owner of the company and know what the company as is worth. VHS, 'Service The Priority'. An Interview with Sir Marcus Sieff by Kenneth Kendall The interview begins with footage of Lord Sieff on a spot-check visit to an M&S store, testing the quality of products. He identifies poor quality in the stitching of a button-hole on a ladies' blouse and a bruised peach in the food department. He then takes both items back to Head Office for discussion at a management meeting. In the follow-up he explains to the interviewer how the blouse will be subsequently examined by a selector and a department technologist before being returned to the manufacturer to see what went wrong. Lord Sieff says he reads all letters from customers every morning and gets an average of five a day. They are a mixture of compliments and complaints, with more of the latter. However, he says that most of the complaints regarding service and quality are justified. Although he relies on correspondence, he maintains that there is no substitute for turning up in a store and seeing first-hand the service that customers receive. When asked what improving service means, his reply is 'giving customers the help and advice they need in a variety of ways'. He illustrates this with an example from the clothing department where a customer needs to know the fit, fabric and washing requirements for a particular item. He stresses that most staff do give good service and M&S is renowned for it, but bad service does exist and needs addressing. Three examples of customers' responses are shown: the first is very complimentary, the second is mildly critical and the third is outraged, saying she felt she was 'treated like a thief'. Lord Sieff is very concerned at this and makes three points on improving service: 1. To ensure the proper distribution of goods to stores. 2. To get management to deploy staff where service is most needed. 3. Always to be courteous, respectful and accepting of valid criticism. When asked how he will measure improved service, Lord Sieff replies that this should be reflected in the customers' letters he receives. Once again he stresses that personal visits to stores to check on the quality of service are the best form of monitoring it. Running Time: 11min 52s

Lord Rayner introduces the video talking about the companies' success over the past 12 months and the future plans the company has install. This is includes expanding the UK market by opening more out of town stores and expanding the International market by opening stores in North America and Middle East. The 'St Michael Chargecard' is mentioned as being a successful innovation that year. The Lord Rayner thanks staff for their contribution of withholding the key values of integrity, quality, value and service. The Lord Rayner's talk is reinforced by a short film that follows with a voice over and a series of clips including Newcastle Metro Centre Store, clips from Head Office, Marble Arch Store and various images of home furniture products. A voiceover welcomes people to the 1984 spring fashion show, with the audience is seated at banquet style tables. The introduction discusses M&S heritage, and begins with models in period dress. The models are presented in themes, by style and colour including menswear and womenswear. Each theme includes daywear, evening and beachwear. Casualwear is presented first, some with a nautical/ military theme. More formal and eveningwear is also included. There are masculine shapes with monochrome, natural and khaki colours; Ladies skirt suits with hats and minimal other accessories; Ladies day wear and swim wear with a 1950s style; Formal wear accessorised with hats and gloves; Utility wear with loose fit bottoms and wide fit jackets, military in look. 1987-1999

This report gives and overview for turnover and profits of the previous year. Richard Greenbury talks through some points with others being done as a voiceover. An overview is given for different departments and which performed well within the UK and the increase in the men's catalogue. Simon Marks used to spend two days a week in stores so it is only right that Greenbury does the same. Stores must be well managed and know their customers with the in demand products always available. The expansion of the edge of town stores such as Meadowhall; Pudsey; Thurrock and Merryhill are mentioned. There has also been an expansion in the neighbourhood food stores. An interview is shown with various staff members, Karen Frew of Meadowhall who joined the Youth training work scheme in 1983. Selina Pang who is deputy manager in the Pacific Place store Hong Kong. Quality and Value will be the focus moving forwards. Expansion will be happening in Europe. Canada has had a difficult year including the D'allards and Peoples divisions. The USA has also had a difficult year but doing better with the Kings and Brooks Brothers brands. Brooks Brothers has been outstanding in Japan. The staff and company have raised £5 million to put back into community projects as it is the "right thing to do". The 1988 initiative of Quality Service Campaign is to be re-emphasised to help move through the recession. It is the Head office and store staff that make the company what they are and they are thanked for their continued loyalty and service to the company. Video is filmed in various stores. This report begins with Lord Raynor giving an overview, followed by a voiceover with clips of stores giving extra details. All the new staff to the company are welcomed. New till data capture and I.T. have improved services. The first Spanish store has opened in Madrid - Viv King speaks of the partnership between M & S and a Spanish retailer to ensure customer needs are met.. Brooks Brothers in New York was redeveloped and a new store in Chicago on Michigan Avenue was opened. Japan opened 3 new Brooks Brother's stores. Hong Kong opened two new stores. In the UK Edgware, Bayswater and Welwyn Garden, Fosse Park stores were opened. In the financial services division two new services of Personal equity plan and Unit Trust products launched. Over £4.5 mil spent in community projects including the Primary Enterprise Scheme; Young Environmentalist of the Year; other local charities where staff have fundraised. Constant innovation and attention to standards helps M&S stay ahead of the competition. Paul Whitlock, food technician talks about food products. Investment in I.T. has allowed for more shop floor staff and Product turnaround of 5 days rather than 4 weeks, and the launch of the Wedding List creating extra sales of Felsham China and Crystal. Increase in the use of M&S charge and budget cards accounts for 20 % of UK Sales and will be able to be used internationally from next year. Other financial products increased. Opening of the Nice store took the Continental European stores to 19 with £237 million in sales. Franchise has also increased and is doing well. Hong Kong has seen a 64% increase in sales. Japan 20% increase. Canada rationalised and remaining stores have moved into profit. First Scottish store is in development and is the 15th edge of town store, there is an expansion in city centre stores. More Neighbourhood stores have been opened with aim of being more responsive to customer needs. Discusses other projects: Part of the Govern, Glasgow redevelopment for residents. Heather Murice went on secondment to Workable to help with opportunities for disabled people and employability and development of good practices in the field. Martin Right, store manager Oxford, wants to implement pedestrianisation of city centre. M & S principles are still of quality and Service.
