Magazine for M&S International colleagues

1988-1999

Staff Magazine. M&S World replaced the M&S Magazine in September 2015.

This series contains On Your Marks employee magazines. Subjects include fashion and food news, merchandise launches, news from employees and Corporate Social Responsibility and charity work. It replaced St Michael News in July 1999. It was replaced by Your M&S in June 2004.

1999-2004

This staff magazine replaced M&S World from 2019 onwards.

2019-2020

This series contains the 'Sparks' magazines, written by Marks & Spencer employees for employees. Subjects include articles concerning contemporary retail issues, sports and social club news, adverts, health and hygiene tips, cartoons, long service news, fictional stories, obituaries and letters.

1934-1984

This series contains employee magazines and supplements. Subjects include store openings and refurbishment, fashion and food news, merchandise launches and communications to employees from Chairmen and CEOs. St Michael News was replaced by 'On Your Marks' in July 1999.

Jun 1953-Jun 1999

Fashion Supplements came with St Michael News, they were also given out to the public at fashion shows and used as a promotional aid to local advertising.

1966-1989

This series contains staff bulletins. The series runs from 1940-1949, but these digitized issues span 1946-1949. Subjects covered include: Citizens Advice Bureau, employee involvement in HM Forces, letters from soldiers, the customers point of view, air raid precautions, staff entertainment, the Benevolent Trust, new Head Office canteen and regional training courses. In January 1944 the Staff Bulletin was replaced by the Forces Bulletin for the duration of the Second World War. The Staff Bulletin reappeared after the war in Autumn 1946.

1946-1949

The magazine was first published to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the staff welfare scheme in June 1938. It was aimed at "Staff Manageresses and those interested in staff management; to give them an opportunity of exchanging their experiences and opinions on a larger scale than is possible at chance meetings" This publication was first produced in June 1938. Volume number 11 is a photocopy of the original. From Jun 1948 to November 1949 Staff Management News was published together with Training News Bulletin, see ref HO/3/2/2/5.

1938-1960

This series contains the Staff Management News & Training News Bulletin which was produced from February 1948 to November 1949. It also includes three original binding folders. Due to paper shortages, Bulletins No 1-10 were sent to Divisional staff only. Complete circulation to all stores was achieved from No 11. The last issue of Training News Bulletin was published in Nov 1949, Staff Management news continued until November 1960.

1948-1949

This series contains the monthly issued 'Forces Bulletin'. These were produced by Marks & Spencer and distributed to employees serving in the armed forces at home and overseas. This provided service men and women information about the company during their time away. The mission and purpose of the bulletin was described as follows, “we shall send the bulletin out to all our men wherever they may be, and secondly it will provide us with a means of answering many general queries and give more space for items of purely personal interest”.

Jan 1944-Jun 1946

First published in June 1944, following the suspension of Staff Management News in June 1940. Its aim was to act "not as an additional circular but as a useful means of saving time, labour and paper, which would replace individual letters and odd circulars". Articles cover topics such as tills, coupons, ticketing, training materials and facilities, and events. From Jun 1948 to November 1949, Training News Bulletin was published together with Staff Management News, see ref HO/3/2/2/5, after which publication was stopped.

1944-1947

Bulletins and Weekly Bulletins gave advice to managers on best-selling lines and how to promote various products. Other subjects include operations instructions, merchandising over the Christmas period, staff matters, extracts from weekly reports, stock ordering, national health, pensions insurance and unemployment. The title of the publication changed from Weekly Bulletin to Bulletin and was published from 1927 to 21 Feb 1930.

1927-1930

This series contains Your M&S employee magazines. Subjects include fashion and food news, merchandise launches, news from employees and Corporate Social Responsibility and charity work. It replaced On Your Marks in June 2004. In Nov 2014 it was rebranded and renamed M&S Magazine.
